As a resident of Los Angeles, I’m always keeping an eye out for unique travel destinations within driving distance, which is why I was excited to learn about the five-star Rancho Valencia spa/resort. Located 25 miles north of San Diego, Rancho Valencia is part of the luxe Auberge collection of resorts, and it includes a full service spa, fitness and wellness activities, a highly-ranked restaurant serving California coastal cuisine, and plenty of other diversions like tennis, croquet, bocce ball, biking, swimming, etc.

There are a variety of room types to choose from, including an array of suite configurations, a 5,000 square foot standalone adobe home called the Hacienda, and several three bedroom luxury villas.  If money is no object, I’d go for one of villas, which boast top-of-the-line amenities like private outdoor terraces, jetted outdoor hot tubs, fully equipped gourmet kitchens with Viking appliances, and pre-arrival grocery shopping! If you’re like me and can’t quite justify the villa cost, opt for a lovely casita junior suite with garden patio.

Keep in mind: Rancho Valencia is a very swank resort with prices to match, but they do have some special offers and packages that allow you to save some dough. Also, pets under 40 pounds are welcome (you’ll just have to pay a one-time cleaning fee of $75).

Bonus tip(s): Given its proximity to San Diego, you can bookend your spa getaway with visits to some of the major attractions in the area, like the San Diego Zoo, Torrey Pines State Reserve and the Cabrillo National Monument.
